Eating Baltimore 101
In a word: crab.
You can’t not partake of crabs when you’re in Baltimore. It’s simply impossible. Here are a few places that serve as a showcase for the Baltimore culinary scene.
If you’ve never done the Maryland crab thing, like me, all you have to know is it’s a lot like the Maine lobster thing. You get a bib and a few tools and whack away. Obrycki’s is *the* Baltimore crab house, and has achieved a certain degree of fame by serving as a question on Jeopardy. It takes some practice, as I was still picking bits of shell from my hair the next day.
Miss Shirley’s Cafe is commonly regarded as Baltimore’s best breakfast place, Crab of course is on the menu, but a few dishes also skew southern, with grits and fried green tomatoes in evidence.
The Brass Elephant in the Mount Vernon neighborhood is old-world Baltimore. Walk in and feel the ghosts of powdered-wigged gents walking around. Executive Chef Marcus Olson cut his teeth in Manhattan cooking for more than a few Wall Streeters who are destined to spend time in Club Fed, and his menu clearly reflects his skill: cedar planked salmon, a shellfish trio, and crab and shrimp fusilli.
