Bahia Principe Akumal

My aunt travels twice a year with her husband and two children.  Rarely does she have a negative word to say (in general).  But when she looks forward to a holiday and it isn’t what it was meant to be, she speaks up.  This is her review of the Bahia Principe in Akumal:

We stayed at the Bahia Principe Akumal in the Mayan the 1st week of August. We found the hotel complex to be way too big. Let me start with the service at the hotel. My husband and I traveled with our son, therefore we were 3 in a room, when we arrived we were informed that there may not be enough towels in the room, which there weren’t. The next day, even though we did not ask for the towels to be changed we only got 2 towels again. Of the 7 days we were there, we were only given the correct amount of towels, once and we were in the Golden area of the resort. The staff at the restaurants were not very pleasant, very slow and not very willing to help. We have been to many resorts in the carribean and found the staff here the most unfriendly of all.

The restaurants, eventhough there were many, did not have a great variety of food especially at the buffets, in comparison to the Riu’s that we have been to. The snack bar that was by the Golden area pool, was very slow. It is not buffet style, you have to place your order and there were days that it took 20 – 30 minutes to get your food. Drinks were warm, no ice and bar service at the snack bar was slow. As for the large buffet restaurant, you could not walk in to them with your bathing suits on or wet, when you are on the beach sometimes you just do not want to get all dressed up to get food. The restaurants were not very well ventilated, even at night it was extremely hot even with the fans, it was uncomfortable to eat.
The pool areas were massive, well maintained and not overly busy. The beach area was okay, not half as nice as the beach in the Playacar, a lot rockier and no shade. The best part of the beach was the snorkeling, it was great.

I would return to the Mayan Riviera but I would not go back to the Bahia Principe, I would not go any further than Playcar. The traffic (2 1/2 hour drive) was crazy to get to and from the resort. I do not think I would rate the hotel a 5 star, maybe the pool area but definitely not service.

An honest opinion from a great source.
