Upcoming Fun World Events For 2010
If you’re in a travel rut and need some ideas for traveling, check out What’s On When, a world events calendar that lists festivals both obscure and vast. Here are a few on my radar:
*On Maundy Thursday in Verges, Spain, the entire town “celebrates” with a Dansa de La Mort a/k/a the “Dance of Death” once the sun goes down in a page straight out of Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre: five dancers dressed in glow-in-the-dark skeleton costumes entertain the crowd.
*On March 1st in Bulgaria, the entire country celebrates Martenitsa, the Festival of Baba Marta, which signals the end of spring. People give each other red and white tassels or small wooden dolls. According to the source, Martenitsa is either borrowed from the Bulgarian word for March, or an old woman named Baba Marta.
*In the French Riviera, the Menton Lemon Festival going on now through March 3rd features a parade of floats with everything from Buddhas to tropical forests on the Promenade du Soleil for a Parade of Golden Fruit and the Moonlit Parade. There’s a light show focused on the orange and lemon statues as well as a Citrus Exhibition.
*The World Expo from May 1st through October 31st in Shanghai promises to be big, both with exhibits and presentations and the inevitable international protests.
