Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

6)    Shane Sakata is a Canadian expat who lives in Tokyo and blogs about it at The Tokyo Traveler.com. He recently filled readers in on green tips they could follow when traveling to the city, and mentioned the citywide Cool Biz program. “Workers can scrap the tie and jacket over the summer months so that less energy is used to cool office buildings,” he wrote, adding that the initiatives saved an estimated 1.14 million tons of carbon dioxide in fiscal 2006, equal to the amount emitted by 2.5 million households in a month.  “Use Cool Biz on your trip by setting the air conditioner in your hotel room to 28 degrees Celsius, or better yet, open up a window and enjoy the breeze.”

7)    The Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa in Chandler, Arizona, offers guests the opportunity to participate in their GeoGreen program, which combines cultural sustainability with environmental responsibility through a variety of programs. Paper, plastic and aluminum are recycled from guestrooms, there’s a “Cultural Concierge” on staff to help educate guests about the native Pima and Maricopa tribes, and the resort’s restaurants make full use of locally-grown ingredients.

8)    Whistler offers one of the first destination-specific carbon offset programs available to tourists. The resort’s EcoPath offset program and online calculator allows visitors to offset all the emissions they generated from traveling to and from the resort. See how many kilograms of carbon dioxide involved in getting you from your home to Whistler – including ground transport from the airport – and purchase your offset when you make your reservation.

9)    If you hanker for a trip to Costa Rica, you can get a 100% carbon-neutral vacation to boot with the group NatureVacations. The flight down on NatureAir is 100% carbon neutral, and the hotels where you’ll stay in the Central Valley/Osa Peninsula will offset every other ounce of carbon created during your stay.  Activities include guided nature walks, sustainable jungle tours, and the opportunity to participate in a reforestation program.

10)    Tourism Toronto offsets all flights for media, clients and employees traveling to and from Toronto through an organization called CarbonZero.
