Sweetgrass Baskets: Weaving A Culture

A couple weekends ago, I attended Tyler Florence’s Music To Your Mouth food and wine festival in Bluffton, South Carolina at the Inn at Palmetto Bluff.

If you’ve ever visited Charleston or the Lowcountry, a region that stretches along the South Carolina and Georgia coast — you may be aware of the sweetgrass basket makers, In Charleston you can find them either in the downtown City Market or out on Route 17 heading north through nearby Mount Pleasant.  The artists are of Gullah descent, and can talk and sell baskets while their hands never stop moving, doing the intricate weaving work.

I’ve always wanted to know about the craft, and on Saturday I took a break between sampling BBQ, ribs, wine, and at least four different kinds of pork belly inside the main food tent to ask Cory everything I’ve ever wanted to know about the craft.

If you’d like to get in touch with Cory, stop by his booth downtown in the City Market, right at the steps of the Confederate Museum at the corners of Market and Meeting Street at the very front of the market. Or send him an email at corey.alston@comcast.net.
