Service – An Act of Help or Assistance

I typed service into Google (rather, I googled the word service) and got the following summarized definition:

‘work done by one person or group that benefits another’

There have been countless articles written about service, lack thereof and more. I want to share my thoughts and an experience I recently had which shows how easy it can really be.

My wife and I attended the Toronto International Art Fair and went looking for food once we were done. We ended up at a very good restaurant that was busy. No tables available, the manager offered us a seat at the bar while we waited for the next available table. Noticing we were too hungry to wait, he offered a list of other restaurants in his neighbourhood. He could not have been more helpful. He did not have to assist us in any way and we felt taken care of. This, even though we didn’t even eat at the restaurant.

We were impressed. This was a genuine case of very good service. He did not have to offer any assistance, but he did, most likely knowing that we would return.

This story doesn’t sound like much, but that proves my point. The smallest act of kindness goes a very long way.  We would return to this restaurant without hesitation.

Far too often, this type of assistance is missing. The fact that we were so surprised speaks volumes because it just doesn’t happen. Yet, how easy was it?

Day to day, I deal in a service industry and can honestly say that customer communication is the single most important thing we do. Even if you have to say NO to something, communicating in an effective and unselfish way pays dividends in the long run.
