I think pockets of people will be affected. Slumping retails sales could lead to job cuts and falling wages among lower income earners. Obviously the manufacturing sector. In the news this week, we saw EI claims in Oshawa jump 96% over last year. Pretty dramatic stuff. I think in these situations, the most vulnerable (economically speaking) suffer first, and likely hardest. As you suggest though, I personally don't expect to suffer much.

I think the downturn has yet to affect us and we won't see any changes to lifestyles for a little while. People may not be watching their spending yet but I think that will change in the new year. I hope I'm wrong.
