Conquest Vacations shuts down

This morning, Conquest Vacations shut their doors for good after 37 years serving the travel industry.

I have worked closely with the people at Conquest and they are a good, solid and honest bunch who did not have the resources to survive the current economic climate.

It is never good when a company closes and people lose their jobs.  That being said, something had to give as package holiday prices are extremely low and there are just too many seats that have to be sold in Canada.  Over capacity is a problem that has been around for a few years now and the tour operators have to get their acts in order.

Our clients have been hugely inconvenienced and the travel industry in Canada has yet another black eye.  In the end, our clients will all be receiving a refund as they used their credit cards and our outstanding relationships with all Canadian vacation package providers will allow us to find them a comparable option quickly.

It will be a difficult summer for the Canadian tour operators – let’s hope there are no more closures.

The announcement from Conquest read as follows:

Announcement

Wednesday, April 15, 2009
Conquest Vacations Inc. announced today the cessation of its tour operations effective immediately.

Customers who are booked and paid using cash/check through a travel agency are requested to contact their respective agency who will assist you with respect to a refund or claim.

Customers who have booked directly with Conquest Vacations will be contacted or should they wish to contact Conquest, please email to directcustomers@conquestvacations.com with a booking reference number.

Customers who have booked and paid for their future travel using a credit card, should contact their credit card issuing institution for a refund.

Conquest Vacations regrets the inconvenience caused to the passengers due to cessation of its operations. Unfortunately this has been a result of overcapacity and price war among the major tour operators, unrealistic and unreasonable demands by the credit card processing companies, credit squeeze and economic turmoil in recent months making it impossible for companies like Conquest to continue in business even after weathering many storms over the past 37 years.
