Christmas Week Specials

We’re doing it a little backwards here, covering New Year’s events a few days ago, and now Christmas.  Better late than never.

In fact, earlier may be better, much better this year.  Rumblings in the last week show that the travel sector has performed better than expected in recent months.  A spokesperson for The Westin Resort Aruba says the reservations department is already seeing strong demand for the holidays this year, and that standard rooms are nearly sold out.  “As opposed to last year, where deals improved as the booking window shortened, it’s definitely advantageous for travelers to book early rather than wait until the last minute, to ensure there is availability,” says spokeswoman Leslie Dewees.

Alrighty then.  If this is true, start your engines:

  • Compared to other cruise companies, Norwegian Cruise Line offers a vacation more comparable to a land-based resort experience.  The cruise line’s Freestyle Cruising allows guests to have no set dining times at up to 11 restaurants on board, depending on the ship.  Here are two Christmas-week packages: Norwegian Dawn sails a 9-day Southern Caribbean cruise round-trip from Miami on December 18, from $829/person double occupancy.  Ports of call include: Samana, Dominican Republic; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; St. John’s, Antigua; Castries, and St. Lucia; Basseterre, St. Kitts.  The Norwegian Jewel sails a 7-day Western Caribbean cruise round-trip from Miami on December 20, from $699/person double occupancy.  Ports of call include: Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras; Belize City, Belize; Costa Maya, Mexico and Great Stirrup Cay, NCL’s Private Island.
  • At the Bacolet Beach Club, a boutique hotel in Tobago, the Christmas in the Caribbean package offers rooms from $175 per night for reservations of 3 nights or longer, double occupancy, with breakfast included.  Choose seven nights for $1199 and you’ll also get lunch every day.  Seven nights with full board at $1680 for 2 persons including breakfast, two course lunch, three course a la cart dinner and tax.  Good from December 1, 2009 to January 7, 2010.

  • Christmas means that the Williams House on Amelia Island, Florida gets decked out with Christmas trees, poinsettias and lights for the entire holiday season.  Packages start at $795 per couple include a three-night stay, a goodie basket, Christmas Eve wine and hors d’oeuvres by the fire in the parlor, an evening carriage tour through the village, strawberry croissant French Toast on Christmas morning, and a Southern Christmas buffet served on Christmas afternoon.
  • At LaSource, on Pink Gin Beach in Grenada, Christmas brings live holiday music and the Caribbean Eggnog Beach Party on Christmas morning as guests eagerly await the arrival of Santa in true Caribbean style.  A traditional Christmas Carvery & Beach BBQ follows.  Later, a traditional five-course Christmas dinner is served on Christmas night.  LaSource is all-inclusive and includes all meals and beverages, one spa treatment per day following the day of arrival, a dive a day for certified divers, and all service charges and gratuities.  Other activities include water skiing, wind surfing, kayaking, tennis, archery, golf, fencing and hiking.  From November 30th to December 16th, 2009, rates start at $330 per person per night, double occupancy, rising to $520 from December 17th, 2009 to January 6th, 2010.
