Vancouver or Bust?

Get Your Winter Olympics Jones Someplace Else

With the Winter Olympics days away, some travelers are invariably looking into last-minute deals and hotel room vacancies in Vancouver.

Totally unnecessary. You don’t have to go to Vancouver to soak up Olympic glory. A variety of hotels and resorts — many in warm-weather locations — are featuring special Olympics-themed packages. Here are a few:

*The Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego has a special Olympic-themed bar menu with specialty items such as “Heather McPhie Sliders” and “Shaun White Wings.” The lobby bar will broadcast the Olympics on a giant screen and every time Apolo wins a Gold medal, the hotel will buy a glass of Molson for everyone in the bar.

*The Boulders in Carefree, Arizona, has a Go for the Gold package. When guests book four nights the 5th night is free, and guests can also combine a variety of golf and spa options: When you book any combination of four rounds of golf or spa services, you’ll receive the fifth one free. For example, play three rounds of golf and get one spa treatment — or any other combination — and get a free round of golf or free spa service.

*Kimpton Hotels has a special “ESCAPE THE OLYMPICS” rate for Canadians, offering a “20.10%” discount at any of their Seattle hotels: the Alexis, the Hotel Vintage Park, and the Hotel Monaco. All guests have to do is show their Canadian ID at check-in. The promotion is good February 1, 2010 through March 1, 2010. To book, go to www.kimptonhotels.com and use the rate code “OLY.”

*At Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York, guests can try their hand at not one but three different winter Olympic sports: curling, ice-skating, and cross-country skiing. Midweek, January 4 through February 28, 2010, inclusive rates start at $186.90 per person, per night, based on double occupancy–a savings of up to 40%.

*The Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale has several Olympic-caliber options to choose from. In the spa, the 50-minute “Go for the Gold Facial” begins with an antioxidant-rich copper peel, followed by an anti-aging gold rescue cream. The Onyx Bar & Lounge has mixed up the Burning Torch cocktail, crafted to resemble the Olympic flame: brown sugar spooned into the bottom of a Champagne flute is drizzled with Lucid Absinthe, lit, et voila!
