Lake Austin Spa Resort

Hey there, how about a little bit of Texas Diamond Dust sprinkled into your spa treatment?

When I mentioned to a few Austin friends that I was going to spend a few days at the Lake Austin Spa Resort earlier this fall, they all oohed and aahed. One admitted that his wife was a frequent guest since every time he ended up in the doghouse with her, he bought her a gift certificate to make amends.

For me, if the locals like a place, it’s the equivalent of the Good Housekeeping stamp of approval. But if you’re expecting an ultra-luxe rarified air to the place, you’d be wrong. After all, this is Texas, where blue jeans and cowboy boots are virtually considered to be formal dress.

The guest rooms and common areas reminded me more of an upscale Adirondack lodge, while the Lakehouse Spa felt like an airy summer retreat with ample lavender aroma everywhere you go.

The food is abundant and tasty, as far as spa food goes. You can always order more if you’re hungry, but in truth, Lake Austin Spa has joined the overall trend of the modern-day spa culture, where women — predominantly so — go to relax and dish on girlfriend getaways instead of the gotta-lose-ten-pounds-or-else mindset of spas past.

And even though the Spa has just been voted the #1 Destination Spa for 2009 by Conde Nast Traveler, a visit is still within economic reach. Promotions include free spa treatments, multi-night discounts, half-off a second guest’s rate, and other extras that many luxury resorts are providing these days.

Lake Austin Spa is great for folks who want a remote spa escape while also having the option of heading into the city for some action, 35 minutes away. Though after you get done with a 90-minute facial or massage, I predict the best you’ll be able to manage is a slow shuffle to the chaise lounge in front of your room or the deck that overlooks its namesake lake.
