Hidden Las Vegas, Baby
Oh sure, the majority of visitors to Vegas act like a bunch of crows, sticking to all the shiny things on the Strip.
But there’s an entire world away from the Strip. Here’s the insider scoop from those in the know. I’m keeping their identities hidden in case others become miffed at publicizing their favorites. Curious that the vast majority of the suggestions that came in are restaurants…
- Lindo Michoacan: Arguably the best Mexican food in Vegas, located off-Strip at Desert Inn Road and Eastern Avenue in the eastern part of town. Serves both authentic Mexican dishes, like lengua and cactus dishes, as well as better known fare such as tacos, enchiladas, etc.
- Paymon’s Mediterranean Grill & Hookah Lounge: The best hookah lounge around, according to my source. Fun, funky crowds, and B-list and local celebs hang out there. It’s located near the University of Nevada/Las Vegas, but it’s not really a college hangout.
- Pierro’s Italian Cuisine: is located just off the Strip and is the best place to head for old-school, classic Italian. It’s been there since the ‘60s and has hosted a Who’s Who of Vegas entertainers and celebrities through the years.

- The Peppermill Lounge is on the old end of the Strip. It’s also been around since the Sixties and has a funky firepit, waitresses in long gowns, and all kinds of classic cocktails.
- Battista’s Hole in the Wall is a quirky little Italian restaurant with wall-to-ceiling memorabilia. The menu is all inclusive—soup/salad, entrée, pasta, cappuccino and all-you-can-drink table wine. A short, older man goes from table to table playing the accordion and singing.
- The Double Down Saloon bills itself as a clubhouse for the lunatic fringe and a real ‘anti-Vegas’ venue. Double Down is home to the fabled Bacon Martini.
