A Little Bit of Italy in Turks and Caicos
A little over a year ago, I spent a few days wandering around the island of Providenciales — Provo for short — and tried my hand at all the typical island activities: sunset cruises, walking the beach, playing a few hands in the tiny casino.
First off, the Turks & Caicos is not your typical Caribbean country. It’s illegal to open a fast-food franchise anywhere in the country. In the mid-90s, Kentucky Fried Chicken tested the law, spent over a million bucks to open a restaurant, only to have the government make them close it down shortly after. And more than a few locals who moved to the T&C from other Caribbean nations bemoaned the fact that the whole island didn’t even have a bowling alley, and aside from activities for tourists, the place basically rolled up the sidewalks around 8 or 9 at night.
Depending upon your leanings as a traveler, that may be right up your alley. In any case, I stayed at two resorts that were radically different. First was the Ocean Club West, a typical family-friendly condo resort with outdoor bars, pools, and all rooms within spitting distance of the surf.

Tuscany on Grace Bay, Turks & Caicos
Next I moved to The Tuscany on Grace Bay, and it was almost like entering a different country. Set on the northeast of the island where the beach is actually wider, due to an extensive beach restoration project undertaken a couple years back, The Tuscany is an elegant and intimate condo development with a total of 30 luxury three-bedroom units; only twelve of those are rented out on a regular basis, making visitors some of the lucky few.
While it seems apparent from its quiet appearance of understated luxury that the Tuscany is for adults only, it’s not the case at all. In fact, staff will cater to families with infants to teenagers in tow; scads of DVDs are at the ready as are changing tables and oodles of toys.
But The Tuscany — you can’t really call it a resort, at least if the term compares with neighboring hotels — also welcomes honeymooners and couples intent on a romantic weekend — or week. A path of rose petals scattered from the threshold to the bed is an everyday task for staff.
